Experiment

Circulating FGF-21 levels in B6 mice fed ketogenic diet
Summary Data Summary
Investigator Ramsey, Jon
Description This is a diet study investigating the impact of diet macronutrient balance on
aging. Mice were randomly divided into 3 groups at 12 months of age and fed
either a control (%kcal; 60% carbohydrates, 20% fat, 20% protein), low
carbohydrate (%kcal; 10% carbohydrates, 70% fat, 20% protein) or ketogenic
(%kcal; 0% carbohydrates, 90% fat, 10% protein) diet. All mice were fed 11.2
kcal/d to prevent hyperphagia and maintain a stable body weight. Measures of
physiological function were performed and serum was collected in cohorts of mice
at 13 and 26 months of age.

Mice consuming a ketogenic diet have increased life span and improved markers of
health span (memory and motor function) in late life compared to control mice
consuming a standard rodent diet (high carbohydrate).
