Experiment

TFAM skms transgenic chow and HFD clamps
Summary Data Summary
Investigator Johnson, Matthew
Description The pathophysiology of Type 2 diabetes has been attributed to insulin
resistance, particularly in the liver and muscle. As skeletal muscle is a major
site of glucose utilization, its metabolic capacity may influence insulin
resistance. Patients at risk for insulin resistance, such as sedentary
individuals, have a decreased content of mitochondria in skeletal muscle, and
endurance trained athletes have high insulin sensitivity in the presence of high
mitochondrial content. The TFAM transgenic mouse model with muscle specific
overexpression of Mitochondrial Transcription Factor A (TFAM) are used to study
the pathway of mitochondrial biogenesis and its implications for systemic
physiology and health.
